Pros and cons

According to our monitor expert

  • You can use multiple windows at the same time on the ultrawide screen.
  • Thanks to the Wide QXGA resolution with HDR10 support, you can enjoy sharp images and colors.
  • You can tilt the screen for a good working position by blocking bright sunlight, for example.
  • The screen isn't adjustable in height to take on a more ergonomic sitting position.

Description

The LG UltraWide 38WR85QC-W is a 38-inch ultrawide monitor for your home office. The screen is wider and higher than most monitors. That's useful when you edit photos and while you work from home. The curved screen of this monitor has a high Wide QXGA resolution, so you can edit photos and videos even more precisely. The combination of the Nano IPS panel and 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 profile ensures a very realistic color representation from every viewing angle. This monitor is also tiltable, which is useful when you want to block the sunlight.

Resolution champion for that extra productivity

  • Fantastic resolution especially on the vertical axis 2160p of a 4K screen is unique within 21:9
  • 21:9 is a great ratio, fits perfectly to divide your screen into 3 zones
  • One of the few USB4/Thunderbolt4 monitors available at the time of writing
  • No real KVM capabilities (only software solution)

Ever since LG announced it at CES 2021 (a year and a half between announcement and availability), I've been eagerly waiting for this homeworking/photo editing/video editing beast. As soon as it was available I ordered it.

Mainly bought because of:

  • Thunderbolt 4
  • 72Hz refresh rate
  • 5120x2160 resolution
  • the small curve that prevents your eyes from having to refocus continuously
  • daisy-chaining capability for the thunderbolt 4 port
  • picture by picture options (connect 2 sources at the same time) which is handy for my workflow

So far, my experiences with the screen are positive, only when connecting a Macbook Pro you have to take into account that it switches to an HDR setting by default. However, this means that the contrast and brightness leave something to be desired. Disabling HDR is the only logical option for office work.

The most convenient thing is that, if your laptop supports it, you can connect it with 1 (Thunderbolt) cable and it can both use the built-in USB HUB, charge your laptop and send the video signal all over that same (Thunderbolt) cable.

Another tip, buy a monitor arm immediately, because the supplied foot just takes up too much space on your desk, keep in mind that it is a serious boy, so I also bought one for the monitor arm myself. Can carry 18kg as the monitor itself weighs over 10kg.

Maybe look for an alternative

  • Good image quality and colors
  • Frequent flickering

I work full time at home with this screen (graphic designer). I was initially happy with the product in terms of quality and colors, but after a few weeks, the screen often (2-3 times a week) started to flicker enormously, accompanied by a beep from the back. That only goes away if I turn it off for a few hours. For that money I would have hoped for better. The button at the bottom of the screen also does not always respond. The back looks a bit 90s plastic, but it still stands against the wall. The foot takes up a lot of space, so it is better to use a brace.

More than enough pixels

  • 5K image provides a huge amount of screen space
  • Beautiful (realistic) colors and sharp image
  • Image and charging laptop via USB-C
  • Changing settings via menu is a hassle

After hesitating for a long time, I now went for a widescreen and I'm glad I did. The curve ensures that you have a good view of this 1 meter wide screen. It's wonderful to have so much space for both work and private life.

This screen has been on the market for a while and newer screens are slowly coming onto the market, but the price is still high (just like this screen is not cheap). The image is sharp and has good colours. The room where I am sitting is not overly lit, so the contrast is very good for me.

A nice feature is that the screen has PbP (Picture by Picture), so you can view two different sources at the same time. This can be a 1:1 division and also approximately 2/3 + 1/3 (4K width + remainder). You have to adjust this setting via the menu, which works reasonably well with the button below the screen. The pity about this is that functions are hidden in the menu and, for example, quickly switching between PbP and normal is therefore not possible.
