Pros and cons

According to our mirrorless camera expert

  • The versatile 24-70mm lens lets you take portrait photos, landscape photos, architectural photos, and nature photos, among other things.
  • You can take clear photos thanks to the 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor.
  • The image stabilization has focus point VR, which focuses the stabilization on the main subject.
  • Due to its retro design, this camera has no grip like you may be used to from other mirrorless cameras.

Description

The Nikon Z f + NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 is a retro mirrorless camera that lets you take landscape, portrait, and nature photos. You can easily set the camera manually with the 3 dials on the top of the camera. Thanks to the full-frame sensor of 24.5-megapixels and the large diameter of the Z mount, your photos look clear. Even in low-light areas, you can take clear images. The design is sealed against water and dust, which allows you to easily take it anywhere. You can also use it in cold conditions down to 0°C. The focusing system has accurate subject recognition and ensures that your subject is in focus.

Versatile zoom lens

The focal length of the 24-70mm makes the lens suitable for landscapes, portraits, and nature photos. It has a short 0.3m focal distance across the entire zoom range, which gives you full control over your close ups. You can bring the smallest details in nature into focus, for example. Thanks to the fixed f/4 aperture, you can have consistent exposure when you zoom in with the lens.

Image stabilization

Thanks to the built-in image stabilization, you can take sharp photos and videos. This IBIS corrects up to 8 stops, which allows you to use slower shutter speeds while shooting handheld. The image stabilization has special focus point VR. Here, the camera focuses on the active focus point and ensures your subject is in focus.

Video

Record professional videos in 4K resolution and record with the Z f in 4K 60, 30, or 24 fps. In Full HD, you can record at up to 120 fps. These images are suitable for extreme slow motions, so you can highlight a particular activity moment even more.

This camera provided better images than I expected!

  • The large sensor has a good ISO performance, so you can take good photos even in low light.
  • The design has the 80s look
  • Focus is sometimes a bit on the slow side

For its (fairly) small looks, this camera produces better images than you would expect! Especially when light is a challenge. The large sensor has a good ISO performance, so you can take good photos even in low light. However, the focus can sometimes be a bit on the slow side and the 80s look should suit you. Without the extra wide grip, I found this camera to be insufficient to hold on to, especially because the camera is not very lightweight. All in all, a good system camera and one that can be used in a variety of ways! It is better to avoid very fast action shots, but every other type of shot will come out perfectly from the camera.

Beautifully retro on the outside, modern on the inside

  • Beautiful retro design
  • Super modern on the inside
  • Solidly built
  • Ergonomics not as good as Z5/Z6 etc.

Before I purchased the Zf, I hesitated for some time, mainly because of the negative points I mentioned. I therefore looked at the necessary reviews on YouTube in order to make a well-considered decision and finally I took the decision and ordered it from Coolblue. At that time (and perhaps still now), Coolblue was one of the most favorably priced providers and the SmallRig grip for the Zf was also included as standard. In short, a good deal! If you have any soft spot for retro design, the Nikon Zf is a truly beautiful camera to have in your hands. With the SmallRig grip, the camera actually feels quite good in your hands. I just prefer to use my Tamron 35-150mm lens (approx. 1.2kg) on my Z5. But with, for example, the Nikon 24-200mm, the Zf plus grip is still very good and comfortable to use. Despite the lack of custom presets, I can still easily switch between facial recognition on the one hand and center focus + tracking on the other, thanks to a few tricks. This way I hardly have to delve into the menus and can still easily handle photographing in different circumstances. I can highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a camera with nice retro looks and good performance. If you shoot a lot by hand with heavy lenses, it might be wiser to look at one of the other Z cameras.

Nice robust compact camera

  • Small device with nice quality
  • Couldn't put videos on the computer.

This camera is nice and compact with many options. You can set everything yourself using the buttons at the top, which is quite easy to operate. It is clear how to adjust things, so you don't have to search in a menu. It is a bit on the heavy side, I expected a lighter version. On the other hand, because it is so robust, it also gives you some confidence that you do not have a cheap camera. I have not been able to put the videos on my computer after a week of testing, so I cannot give a review on that yet. The photos are very beautiful and of good quality.
