If you hold the handle/holder down while brushing, it will indeed become somewhat wet and therefore slippery. If you hold the holder horizontally or slightly up, you will not have any problems with this. So I brush horizontally. The advantage of the smooth exterior is that you can easily rinse it clean, dry it with a towel and you're done. My partner has a cheaper Oral B, with a ribbed handle. It is indeed more difficult to hold when wet, but it also looks a bit more grimy over time, probably due to some limescale deposits in the ribs of the handle. My Oral B with smooth handle is not affected by this. It looks nice and sleek. I immediately bought black brush heads, because with a white brush head on the black holder it doesn't look nice...
