Pros and cons

According to our smartwatch expert

  • Get insight into your fitness with the VO2 max measurement, which measures the maximum oxygen uptake of your blood.
  • You don't just receive notifications of messages, but you can also make calls with the watch when your phone is near.
  • Thanks to the integrated music player, you can listen to your favorite playlists via your watch.
  • You must charge the watch every day.
  • The watch doesn't show you in which heart rate zone you're working out, so your workouts are less targeted.

Description

Choose extra convenience and control the Fossil Carlyle Gen 5 FTW4024 with your voice. You can start Google Assistant by saying "ok Google". Ask about the weather, start a running session, or set a reminder to buy flowers for your mother. The AMOLED touchscreen is bright and clear and displays many colors. Thanks to the integrated microphone and speaker, you can also make calls with the watch. The watch also has 8GB storage, which allows you to save around 1600 songs. You can play them directly from the watch, so you can leave your phone at home. The Carlyle Gen 5 helps you achieve personal goals. The watch uses a VO2 max measurement, which means it measures the oxygen intake of your blood. A small but fun function is that you can personalize your background with a photo from Facebook or Instagram.

Note: a charger adapter isn't included. Want to charge the watch via a socket? Order an adapter separately.

Nice smartwatch

  • design
  • heart rate monitor
  • Notifications
  • Battery
The Fossil gen 5 (FTW4026) is a beautiful watch to look at. The minimalist design and beautifully finished display make this a very neat smartwatch. The brown leather straps radiate a luxurious feeling. If you would like to replace these straps, this is quite easy because you can click/slide them "loose" with a slide. After opening the box I didn't know how to turn on the watch. After I connected the watch to the supplied charging cable, it turned on automatically. Setting up the watch is quite simple, you follow a few steps on the watch itself and on your smartphone. I use the watch itself in combination with an iPhone. At first, the watch's interface feels a bit sluggish, probably because it performs system updates and app updates in the background. (probably the memory is filling up a bit when performing these updates) After 1 hour of use, the interface is already a lot faster. The watch interface (the clock) is easy to adjust by holding down the screen for a few seconds. Fossil itself supplies a number of custom designs. It is also possible to download a different design from the PlayStore. Also tested spotify, it took a while before I got this going to link it to my current spotify account. The heart rate monitor is fun to use during exercise, it also measures how many calories you have burned. The battery life with a bit more intensive use (especially if it is fairly new) I found somewhat moderate. 10 hours saves that in my case just. I must say that I have everything on. Then the link with an iOS device (iPhone) I think it's a shame that you still need a dedicated app for a wearOS watch that must always be open on your phone. In the app itself you can easily indicate what you want to receive push messages from. Note that you can only set this after a random app on your phone has sent a push message (in the beginning the list will be empty) All in all a cool smartwatch with a cool design, the link with an iPhone and the battery life I think is a bit mediocre, so that's why a 7 as a final mark

Elegant smartwatch but not for the athlete

  • Size (elegant)
  • Always On screen
  • Waterproof
  • Battery life
Appearance: After a few weeks of testing with the Fossil Gen 5 smartwatch, I discovered that it is an elegant smartwatch, where the software does not keep up with the hardware. In addition, I compared the watch with my Garmin Forerunner 235 (a sports watch with basic smartwatch functions). A plus of the Fossil is the size. With my narrow wrist, larger watches quickly seem bulky. The Fossil does not. Both the diameter and thickness are small enough to give the watch an elegant appearance. In addition, the always-on display is beautiful. I always think it's really stupid when you wear a 'watch' on your wrist where all you see is a black screen. With the Fossil you can choose your own dial, where you can always read the time. The screen is nice and bright. Due to the OLED technology, black is really black. Of course, the brightness is reduced in 'always-on' mode, so outside in full sun you may have to activate the watch to see things better. Oh yes, the watch can just go into the water. You should not do deep sea diving with it, but holding it in the shower or in the pool is no problem. Software and operation: Android Wear OS gives a mixed feeling. On the one hand, everything looks neat and navigating through the menus works fine, thanks in part to the rotary knob. You can read your notifications, send simple answers to WhatsApp messages, ask Google Assistant questions and of course install all kinds of apps yourself. In addition to the rotary knob, two other buttons are available, to which you can assign the function yourself. Downside: like most touchscreens, the Fossil also registers touches when drops fall on the screen. It is therefore quite annoying to operate the watch in the rain, because you cannot navigate with the buttons alone. Google Assistant is also quite slow. She sometimes takes the time before she hears you and some more time before she says something back. battery consumption The battery consumption. That's not really a plus. Fossil has tried to make the most of it by offering extensive battery settings and making the watch go into a battery-saving mode when the battery is low. You can also choose a mode where the watch is no longer smart, but can still be used as a watch. However, it remains difficult, because in my opinion you do not buy such a watch just to read the time. If you just use the watch for what it is intended (so as a smartwatch), you can be happy to get through the day and you really have to charge again in the evening. Especially if you include a (sports) activity in between. Unfortunately, most Android Wear watches have this problem. An example from today. The battery percentage was at 89% when I left for a walk. After the walk of about an hour and a half, only 49% of it was left, where I used Google Fit to record the walk. Tracking your marathon with this watch will therefore not work for most people. To play sports Because I regularly run and/or cycle, I was very curious about the possibilities to include activities. I compared it with my Garmin FR235 watch. I registered my first run with Google Fit. The pace while walking was not right. Instead of around 5:10 min/km, the watch read more than 6:00 min/km. When I looked back when I was home, the average speed was correct again. The heart rate also seemed fairly accurate. Unfortunately, you can't really see many details of your activity. The Google apps let it down a bit and feel very basic compared to Garmin Connect. Later I tried the Strava app. This one seemed to display more realistic tempo values along the way, but also doesn't feel very 'off'. You can set little. On the Garmin I can choose which values I want on the display and I hear my speed every kilometer. Missing all those features. There may be better apps, I haven't tested them all yet. It seems that companies do not really dare to bet on Wear OS. Hopefully I'm wrong, but time will tell. The GPS accuracy of the watch seems to be quite good. Compared to the Garmin, the Fossil seems a bit more inaccurate, but that could be just as much about the software as the hardware. Other: The watch also has a speaker, where questions you ask Google can also be answered by the watch and apps can give voice directions, for example. Inside you can hear it nicely, but outside with wind or traffic it is not very useful. A more useful feature is playing music via bluetooth. The watch has 8 GB of memory. You can store music in this memory via, for example, Google Play Music. Now you can go out without your phone and listen to music through your watch. Conclusion: It is difficult to say whether the Fossil is a must or not. Are you mainly looking for a smartwatch and can you live with charging every night? Then the Fossil is an excellent choice. Are you mainly looking for a sports watch? Then something from Garmin or Polar, for example, is the better choice, where you have to accept that these are a bit disappointing as a smartwatch.

Great smart watch!

  • Fast
  • Good quality
  • Beautiful design
  • No
What a great clock, this new smartwatch from Fossil. I was already familiar with the smartwatch family of Fossil, but this one is really brilliant. Linking this watch to an Android phone is almost automatic, it is a piece of cake. After the pairing process, there were a lot of updates for the watch, but the installation went very smoothly. Then take a look at the new features compared to previous Fossil smartwatches. What immediately stands out is the built-in speaker. This is particularly easy because it allows you to talk back to you in the built-in Google Assistant. And that's great, because then you're in the supermarket and you tell your watch to turn on the lights at home, and you hear "Okay, I'll turn on the lights". Brilliant! The possibility that you can make a phone call through your watch, while your phone is in your pocket, is also great! Yes, this new Fossil Gen5 watch is a real asset. The speed at which the clock responds is also remarkable. You can notice that there is a real powerhouse in this watch, that 3100 Qualcomm processor with no less than 4 cores. The working memory of 1 Gb is more than enough to perform smoothly and smoothly. Fast, but without guzzling too much energy. With my dial set to "Always on" I can easily make it into the evening. And if I still have to use my watch for a few days, then there are possibilities to achieve this with this watch. For example, different modes are selectable with which the smartwatch lasts up to three weeks (with only displaying the time). All in all, a great watch that will certainly appeal to sports enthusiasts. For example, you can use apps such as Google WorkOut for registration of all kinds of sports. These are then neatly kept in your Google Fit profile. If you have more requirements for the registration of your workout, you can even install the Strava app on your device, so that everything is neatly uploaded to your Strava profile after your training. With the storage capacity of 8 GB, this watch can handle enough apps, so don't worry about that! All in all a great watch, the best Fossil has released to date. Highly recommended!
