Expert review Sony A7 IV

Sony has released the successor to the popular and powerful Sony A7 III mirrorless camera, the Sony A7 iV. The camera has a better autofocus and a new image processor. I'm curious to see if this makes this camera a worthy successor. In this review, I'll discuss the most important specifications for taking sharp photos and recording smooth footage.

Sony A7 IV

  • Thanks to real-time tracking and Eye autofocus, you can easily focus on the eyes of people, animals, and birds.
  • You record in 4K resolution with 60 fps, which ensures smooth images.
  • Easily switch between the photo and video mode with the dial on the top of the camera.
  • A memory card isn't included.

First impression of the Sony A7 IV

Foldable screen of the Sony A7 IV

As soon as I take the Sony A7 IV out of the box, I notice that the camera is slightly bigger than its predecessor. Especially the grip was improved, and there's more space for a powerful processor. The touchscreen also stands out. It's now completely tiltable and foldable. That's useful if you like to vlog, but also if you want to photograph from a difficult angle. This way, you can always see the frame and you can easily focus.

Fast autofocus

Autofocus of the Sony A7 IV

I'm most impressed by the autofocus of this camera. The Eye AF of the Sony A7 III was already fast, and the Eye AF of the A7 IV is even better. In practice, this means an extremely fast autofocus. If I point the camera at a face, I see a green autofocus point right away on one of the eyes. This function works on people and pets, so this is great both portrait photographers and birdwatchers.

Excellent image quality

The Sony A7 IV has a 33-megapixel full-frame sensor. This provides a high enough resolution to make large prints of your photos. In addition, you have enough pixels to crop your image without losing quality. Thanks to the new image processor, you're less bothered by noise when you use high ISO values. As a result, you can even capture sharp photos and videos at night.

Recording functions

This camera isn't just a strong photo camera, you can also use it to make nice video recordings. With a maximum 4K resolution with 60 fps, you can make smooth high-quality recordings. I recorded a bit in the city and was mostly impressed by the autofocus. When you record in 4K with 60 fps, keep in mind that you record cropped in this resolution. This zooms in on the image. Don't want that? Choose for the 4K with 25 fps setting or record in Full HD.

Conclusion

The Sony A7 IV is the perfect powerful photo camera and compact video camera hybrid. Both photographers and videographers will enjoy the fast autofocus, which ensures that your subject is almost always sharp. Thanks to the new image processor, you won't be very bothered by noise when you record in the dark. The only disadvantage is that you record with a cropped frame if you record in 4K with 60 fps. If you don't care about that or mostly use this camera for photos, the A7 IV is a good choice for you.
