Is your radiator suitable for a smart radiator knob?
Get started with the radiator
In this article, we'll explain whether your radiator is suitable for a smart radiator knob in 4 steps. We'll also explain which knob you need. In addition to your radiator, you'll need a tape measure if you have a suitable radiator.
- Step 1: check the numbers on your current radiator knob.
- Step 2: replace your radiator valve if necessary.
- Step 3: check the valve.
- Step 4: check all the radiators in the house.
Step 1: check the numbers on your current radiator knob
A smart radiator knob only fits on a radiator if it currently has a thermostatic radiator knob. This is a radiator knob that's sensitive to temperature, and it ensures that your radiator only heats when it's too cold. You can recognize a radiator knob by the numbers 1 to 5 on it. If you have such a knob, continue reading from step 3. Continue to step 2 if you have a radiator knob without numbers on it.
Step 2: replace your radiator valve if necessary
A radiator knob without number is called a radiator valve. This allows you to adjust the temperature of the radiator by closing the heat source the way you'd turn off a faucet. Smart thermostats don't work if you connect them to a radiator valve, because they don't rotate. That's why you have to replace the valve with a thermal radiator valve. Do make sure that the pipe of the valve fits seamlessly on your current pipes. Always have a plumber install it for you.
Step 3: check the valve
You have a thermal radiator valve, but there are many types of valves. A valve is the piece pipe your radiator knob is attached to. The standard valve is 30mmx1.5cm. It has a screw thread with a 30mm diameter and a pipe with a 1.5cm diameter. All smart thermostats are suitable for that. If the diameter of your pipe is smaller than 1.5cm, replace it first. Do you have a valve with different dimensions? You probably have 1 of these vlves:
- An M28 valve with a screw thread with a 28mm diameter. Choose a Tado smart radiator knob.
- An M30.5 valve from Vaillant without an adapter. Replace your valve first.
- An M32 valve from Ista without an adapter. Again, replace your valve first.
Step 4: check all the radiators in your house
With 1 smart radiator knob, you can already control the radiator with the new knob remotely. You need a smart radiator knob on every radiator to get the most out of your smart radiator knobs. This way, you can control temperature in each room separately. This is how you save the most on your energy bill. That's why you should check if all the radiators in your house have the same knob or valve. If this is the case, you can install a new smart thermostat.
