Pros and cons

According to our switch expert

  • You place the sensor behind your existing switch, so it is not in sight.
  • Include a sensor or switch in your Z-wave network.
  • Works with alarm detectors, binary sensors and DS18B20 temperature sensors.
  • Without a Fibaro base station, you can't control the switch module with an app.

Description

With the Fibaro Universal Binary Sensor you include any switch or sensor in your Z-Wave network. Mount the sensor behind the existing switch and operate it with an app on your smartphone or tablet. For example, build the sensor in your clock radio and set that when the alarm goes off, the curtains open and the light comes on. Or place the sensor behind your doorbell and automatically take a photo with your ip camera when the doorbell rings.

Quickly provide more equipment with a sulfur interface.

Just like the fibaro RGBW controller, it is not very clear with this module that the 2 inputs have a direct relationship with the 2 outputs. The outputs can therefore not be controlled from the central controller. Function is also fine, in use for motion detectors, doorbell and multiple temperature sensors. Very occasionally (1× per year) had a crash; power cycle and good again.

Ideal for reading alarm outputs

  • Good for mirroring alarm outputs
  • Compatible with Homey
  • No z-wave plus

If you look at the manual or product info on the Fibaro website, you won't really learn what this sensor does exactly. Well, it's actually quite simple: you connect the sensor to low voltage (max 30V) and you can connect up to 2 voltage-free contacts to the inputs. These inputs are then mirrored to the outputs and you can read them with your controller. In concrete terms: you have an existing alarm system whose outputs are provided as potential-free contacts. The "alarm going off" can be such a signal. You can then connect this contact to the sensor as an input. The sensor passes this signal (so 1 or 0) to the output (mirror). This way your controller (Fibaro, but also compatible with Homey) knows whether your alarm is going off. Important: you cannot send signals to the sensor, only read them. To connect the sensor correctly, you need to know something about electronics. I had ordered 2 sensors of which 1 did not work (known problem). Coolblue solved this very quickly! Since the sensor works according to the z-wave protocol, the range is not as far as z-wave plus.
