Pros and cons

According to our camera lens expert

  • The lens is very sharp, even at an aperture of f/1.4.
  • Thanks to the large maximum aperture and the 9 aperture blades, the lens has a very nice bokeh.
  • The HSM autofocus motor ensures fast and silent autofocus.
  • Because the 815g lens contains a lot of glass, it's quite heavy.

Description

The Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Canon is a powerful portrait lens for Canon SLR cameras with an EF mount. It has a large maximum aperture of f/1.4. In combination with the 9 aperture blades, this ensures a very nice background blur. Your subject is completely separated from the background, which is ideal for portraits or product photos. The lens is very reliable and has high-quality lens elements. This way, you're assured of sharp and high-contrast photos. The HSM autofocus motor is fast and silent, so you're accurate in every situation.

Beautiful colors, razor-sharp fully open and solidly built

  • Beautiful colours
  • Razor-sharp, even at f/1.4
  • Well built
  • Slightly on the heavy side

Canon's choice for a razor-sharp 50mm lens fully open is quite limited and expensive until Sigma came up with their own 50mm ART version. Solidity: The lens is very solidly built, only it is not weather-sealed. This is not such a big problem because most 'competitors' of this lens do not have this either. Ease of use: With so much glass, it is a fairly heavy lens for a 50 mm. I use it on my Canon 5D Mark III and together this is not a lightweight. The balance is in order with this body. On a Canon 700D or similar body, the balance will be more forward without a battery grip. Possibilities: 50mm is often described as the 'standard' length. It is a useful length for portraits, both on full frame (50mm) and on a crop sensor (80mm). Certainly with its f/1.4, there are additional artistic possibilities in terms of depth of field. It can also be used to create sharp panoramas or in combination with macro rings. Design: Obviously black. With shiny and matte parts, it is quite sleek, but beautiful. The silver-coloured 'A' of the ART series is not disturbing to me. The filter size is 77mm, which is quite large. Fortunately, most of my other lenses are also 77mm. Quality photos: I have had this lens for about 3 weeks now and I am always amazed at the beautiful colors and sharpness that this lens conjures up on my sensor. The bokeh is also beautiful. Remark: There is often talk about the wrong autofocus at Sigma. I didn't notice this on my copy. If the focus was wrong, it was just me. f/1.4 on a full frame is a small depth of field and the slightest movement causes a shift of where the sharpness is located. Conclusion: This lens is definitely recommended for those looking for something better than the Canon 50 mm f/1.4 and who don't have the money for the Zeiss, which is 4 times more expensive and I think it is certainly not 4 times better. Sigma really has a winner with this lens and the hype that preceded it has certainly been redeemed.

The sharpest 50mm lens under €3,000

  • Sharpest 50mm lens under €3,000
  • F1.4 & Bokeh
  • Accurate autofocus
  • Big

I use this lens on my Canon 80D. The 50mm focal length is pretty much my favorite, so I wanted to upgrade my Canon 50mm f1.8 STM to a more professional lens. This Sigma is exactly what I was looking for. The sharpness is fantastic, right from f1.4 and maximum sharpness is already reached at f2.8. As far as I know, only Carl Zeiss offers a sharper 55mm lens, which is slightly sharper at f1.4. However, that lens costs more than €3,000 and you can only focus manually with it. In that perspective, this Sigma is a steal :) Thanks to the f1.4 aperture, you can create beautiful blurred backgrounds (bokeh). The bokeh that the lens delivers is also beautifully soft. At f1.4, the depth of field is very small, putting the autofocus system to the test. In my practical tests, this lens focuses better and more accurately than the Canon 50mm lens I had before. I wasn't expecting that, but I'm very happy with it! All in all I am very impressed with this lens. I like to take the negatives for granted, given the fantastic photos I can take with this lens.
