What does the energy label of your fridge mean?

Your new fridge always comes with an energy label. This label states important information on the energy use of the fridge, which is required by the European Union. We'll tell you what this label means for you and your purchase in this article.

Sections of the energy label

On the energy label of a fridge, you'll find the following:

  • QR code
  • Energy label
  • Energy consumption
  • Freezer compartment capacity
  • Fridge compartment capacity
  • Noise level

We'll tell you more about these topics in this article.

QR code

At the top right on the energy label, you'll see the QR code. When you scan this code with your phone, you'll go to the database of the European Union. You'll see all the properties of the fridge right away.

Energy label

The energy label indicates how efficient the fridge is with a label between A and G. The closer to A, the more better the product is for the environment. And you'll pay little annual energy costs. Does the fridge have a D energy label or lower? The fridge isn't energy-efficient.

Energy consumption

Energy consumption

In addition to the energy label, you'll also see the energy consumption of the fridge on the label. This is expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh). If you multiply this amount by € 0.30, you get the annual energy costs.

Capacity freezer compartment

Capacity freezer compartment

Does the fridge have a freezer compartment? You'll also see the net capacity of that on the energy label in that case. The higher the capacity, the more food you can store in the freezer compartment. We recommend the following capacity:

  • Small: less than 100L - 1 to 2 people
  • Regular: 110 to 250L - 2 to 3 people
  • Large: 250 to 350L - 3 to 4 people
  • Very large: 350L or more - 4 people or more

Capacity cooling compartment

The same goes for the net weight of the fridge compartment. The higher the capacity, the more groceries you can store. We recommend the following capacity for the fridge compartment:

  • Small: less than 150L - 1 to 2 people
  • Regular: 150 to 250L - 3 to 4 people
  • Large: 250 or more - 5 people or more

Noise level

Noise level

At the bottom, you'll find the noise level of the fridge. The lower the noise level, the more relatively silent the appliance is. Every 3dB doubles the sound. Don't want to be bothered by loud noises? Choose a fridge with a 38dB noise level or less.

  • Silent: 38db or less
  • Average: 39 to 40dB
  • Loud: 41dB or more
