5 tips to keep your laundry soft

Soft bedding when you step into bed or a soft bathrobe when you get out of the shower, that sounds comfortable. Unfortunately, the fabric of your laundry becomes rougher over time if you wash and dry it a lot. To keep your bathrobe soft, you can keep a couple of tips in mind. For example, add a bit of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment.

Tips to keep your laundry soft

We'll give you a number of tips for soft bedding:

  • Tip 1. Dose your detergent and fabric softener
  • Tip 2. Descale your washing machine a couple of times a year
  • Tip 3. Don't overload the drum
  • Tip 4. Dry your laundry at a low temperature
  • Tip 5. Add the dryer balls to the drum

Tip 1: dose your detergent and fabric softener

Dose detergent

Check the label for the correct amount of detergent and fabric softener. It'll say how much you'll need exactly. How much detergent you have to use, depends on the load in the drum. Do you have a small load of laundry with just a few stains? You only need a little bit of detergent. Never use too much, this will make your laundry feel rough. Just add a tiny bit of fabric softener too. When you use too much, towel will become rougher over time.

Tip 2: descale your washing machine

The more calcium and magnesium in the water, the more limescale there will be in the drum. Your towels will feel rougher after each time. That's why you should descale your washing machine a couple of times per year. In this article, you can read how to do this. Also, add some white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment on a regular basis. This removes soap rests and limescale and keeps your towels soft. It also helps to keep the color of the fabric nice for longer.

Tip 3: don't overload the drum

Don't overload the washing machine. Leave about a fist of space on top of the laundry in the drum. Your laundry will become cleaner and come out softer. That's because the water can better rinse off the detergent. Never exceed the maximum load capacity that's listed in the manual.

Tip 4: dry your laundry at a low temperature

Dry laundry

Dry your towels in the dryer instead of on a drying rack. The towels will remain softer thanks to the movements in the drum. When the fabric is hanging still on the drying rack, more limescale particles will soak into the fabric. Your towels will feel rough. Keep your laundry moving, so you won't be bothered with this as much. Put your laundry in the dryer or let it wave in the wind. Make sure to dry your laundry at a low temperature. That way, you can prevent your clothes from shrinking.

Tip 5: put dryer balls in the dryer

Dryer sheets

Your laundry will stay softer with tennis or dryer balls in the drum. They'll keep your clothes separated while drying. Try not to iron your towels and bathrobe after drying. The heat will damage the fibers and they will become rougher. Preferably, use a steam function. That is, if your washing machine or dryer has one. Fold your laundry directly and put it in the closet. You can roll up towels loosely.
