Buying an island range hood: what should you keep in mind?
Choose an island range hood
When buying an island range hood, you should ask yourself the following:
- Do you have a large, open kitchen?
- Do you want to install the range hood on the ceiling above your cooktop?
- Do you have an outwards exhaust ventilation pipe or do you want a recirculation system?
Placement and installation
You install an island range hood on the ceiling above your cooktop. The installation process of this type is very complex. That's why we don't recommend you to do it yourself, it's best to ask a professional. Do you want to install the range hood yourself anyway? Make sure the range hood doesn't hang too high above your cooktop. Otherwise, the range hood won't be able to exhaust all the cooking fumes. Make sure it's installed no higher than 80cm above the cooktop. Check the included manual to see the recommendations of the supplier.
Drain system
It's preferred to install the island range hood to an exhaust ventilation system. With this, the range hood extracts the cooking fumes outwards. The advantage of this is that the range hood can exhaust at full power. You do need an exhaust ventilation pipe for this. Don't you have room for this in your ceiling or do you want to make the installation more simple? Let the range hood recirculate. You'll need carbon filters or a recirculation set for this. On the product page, you'll see what exactly you need to install the range hood.
Difference with a wall chimney model
An island range hood is very similar to a wall-mounted range hood, but there are a few important differences:
- Placement: you mount an island range hood to the ceiling above a kitchen island. You mount a wall-mounted model on the wall.
- Size: an island range hood always has a width of 90cm, while a wall-mounted range hood can be 60cm wide too.
- Extraction rate: the extraction rate of an island range hood is larger, because it's made to remove odors from open kitchens.
