The Apple Watch has 2 buttons, the Digital Crown and the side button. You can use these buttons to navigate your Apple Watch. You can also use the touchscreen of the Apple Watch to switch between apps and go back to the home screen. In this article, we'll explain how you can navigate the Apple Watch as easily as possible.

There are various ways to navigate your Apple Watch.

  • Via the Digital Crown
  • Via the side button
  • Via the screen
  • Via gestures with AssistiveTouch

Navigate via the Digital Crown

Navigate via the Digital Crown

The Digital Crown is the round dial on the side of the Apple Watch. It has various functions.

  • Press the Digital Crown once to view the watch face or home screen with all your apps.
  • Press the Digital Crown 2 times to return to the app you used most recently.
  • Press and hold the Digital Crown to activate Siri. Is your Apple Watch still locked? Unlock it by pressing and holding the Digital Crown for longer.
  • Rotate the Digital Crown to scroll, zoom in or out, or to adjust what's on your screen.

The side button allows you to switch between apps faster. The side button is on the same side of your Apple Watch as the Digital Crown.

  • Press the side button once to show the Dock with apps.
  • Press the side button 2 times to use Apple Pay.
  • Press and hold the side button to use emergency functions or to turn the Apple Watch off and back on.

The part of the Apple Watch you'll likely use most to navigate is the screen.

  • Tap the screen to select an app or part.
  • Tap and hold your finger on the screen to adjust the watch face and view app options.
  • Slide your finger over the screen to scroll or adjust a slider.
  • Swipe up, down, to the left, or to the right to display several screens. For example, you can open the notification center if you swipe down. And if you swipe up, you open the control panel.

AssistiveTouch

With AssistiveTouch, you can control your Apple Watch with movements.

  1. Go to the settings on your Watch and select 'Accessibility'.
  2. Turn on AssistiveTouch and 'Gestures'. You can adjust the 'Gestures' yourself in the settings.

Note: AssistiveTouch only works with the Apple Watch from Series 4 with watchOS 8.3 or newer.

You can navigate through your Apple Watch with the following standard gestures:

  • Pinch*: forward in your selection. To navigate through your apps, for example.
  • Pinch twice: backwards in your selection.
  • Make a fist: tap. This is how you select a menu option, for example.
  • Make a fist twice: activate AssistiveTouch and you'll open the task manager.

*To pinch means o touch your index finger with your thumb.

Apple Watch Ultra: Action Button

Apple Watch Ultra Action Button

The Apple Watch Ultra has an extra button in addition to the 2 standard button. You can find it on the left side of the watch case. Apple calls this button the Action Button. In the settings app on your watch, you can determine the function of this button. For example, you can start your workout or turn on the flashlight with a press of the button.
