How do you use a network switch?

A network switch is a hub for all your network cables. You can connect your router to the switch with a cable and then connect all your other devices. A wired connection is always faster and more stable than a wireless connection. With a switch, you always ensure the fastest connection. And with a managed switch, you can measure how well your network is and what possible problems in your network are.

How does a network switch work?

Network switches stackable

A switch receives the wired signal from your router and distributes this signal to all your devices. An unmanaged switch forwards this signal directly to your devices. A managed switch does this with extra rules, so that data reaches the most important devices faster.

Where do you place the switch?

Small switches at your workplace

Where you place the switch makes no difference for your network. The switch must be in a cool place, or it'll overheat. For the same reason, make sure that it has 5cm of space all around and that direct sunlight can't reach it. Doesn't your switch have a built-in fan? Don't place it in a cupboard without ventilation. You can place the switch in/on a cupboard or mount it to a 19-inch rack mount or to the wall.

How do you connect a network switch?

Connect the Switch

Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the connectors for each device you connect. Then, connect your switch to your router with an Ethernet cable. Only then, connect your switch to your power network. The on/off indicator light of the switch will now light up. The light next to each connector with a cable plugged in should now also be on.

How do you run a cable to your devices?

Switch with access point

You can of course run your cables through your house. You can hang them on hooks so that they don't get in the way. Or you can pull them through a cable duct with a tension spring. You can often find these ducts in your fuse box. If you do this, connect the network cable to your wall socket. Keep in mind that you need to strip the cables if you want to do this.

What can you do with the app of your managed switch?

Switches with some ports, every type

With a managed switch, you can monitor your network. You can see where your network has delays via an app or via your browser. You can also see which devices are connected and how much data they use. When you notice a problem, adjust your network. Do you have a managed switch from NETGEAR or Ubiquiti? Set up your network via the app when you're not at home. The NETGEAR app is called 'Insight' and the Ubiquiti app is called 'UniFi'.

How do you use the PoE function of your switch?

Recognize PoE switch

If you connect a UTP cable to a PoE port on your switch, it works with PoE right away. Your network cable now transfers both data and power. Do you not have a Power over Ethernet switch but still need a PoE connection? Use a PoE adapter in addition to the device that requires Power over Ethernet.
