How do you strip a cable?
Get started with stripping the power cord
Make sure that the wire you're working with isn't getting any power. As long as there's 0 voltage in the wire, you'll be safe during the installation. You need:
- Scissors, a knife, or wire stripper
- A cord with a plug on 1 end
- Tape
We'll explain how to strip a cable with 4 steps.
- Step 1: tape the cord.
- Step 2: remove the cable jacket.
- Step 3: pull off the cable jacket.
- Step 4: connect the 2 wires.
Step 1: tape the cord
A regular power cable contains 2 smaller wires. You're going to remove the jacket of the cable, so you can connect the 2 smaller wires to your adapter or Heat Link. You have to be careful not to damage the interior of these smaller wires. That's why you should use tape to keep the jacket tight when you're going to cut it.
Step 2: remove the cable jacket
Remove the cable jacket with a wire stripper, if you have one. If you don't, use scissors or a knife to cut the cable jacket. Cut from the center of the tape. If you use scissors, don't cut too deep. You don't want to damage the copper wire in the cable.
Step 3: pull the cable jacket off the wires
Pull the cable jacket off the wires and repeat step 2 and 3 with the blue and brown wires. To this extra carefully, because these wires may be even thinner. If you damage the cupper wires inside the blue and brown wire, use a different wire to prevent a short circuit.
Step 4: connect the 2 wires
You now have a brown and blue wire you can connect to your adapter. You can still plug the connector into the socket. The brown wire is the phase wire. It's indicated with an L symbol in the manual, which stands for live. The blue wire is the neutral wire. It's indicated with an N symbol in the manual, which stands for neutral. You can connect the blue wire to the neutral connector of your adapter and the brown wire to the live connector.
