Expert review of the Canon EOS R
Canon EOS R
- Thanks to the 30.3-megapixel full-frame sensor, you can take bright photos and record bright videos.
- The sensor is light-sensitive, so you can also take sharp photos at dark locations.
- You can capture moving subjects with the fast and accurate autofocus.
- The lens doesn't have waterproof and dustproof seals.
- The EOS R doesn't include an adapter to use your EF lenses on the camera.
First impression of the Canon EOS R
The camera feels very light and compact. This is very nice, because I often take my camera with me on the go. Thanks to the low weight, I don't strain my neck or shoulders as quickly when I walk. The rubber grip allows me to firmly hold the compact body. I also like that the camera has a tiltable screen, which I use to photograph from high or low angles. This is also useful for vloggers or video makers.
New RF lens system
There's no mirror in the body of the EOS R, which makes the design compact. Thanks to this compact design, the lenses are closer to the sensor. As a result, some RF lenses have a larger aperture. This large aperture allows me to take sharp photos in the dark or create a soft blurry background. This gives me more options to set up my camera. At a dark location, I don't have to increase my ISO value as soon, for example. This also means that the image doesn't get blurry as easily.
Fast and accurate autofocus with eye detection
While I take photos, I test the autofocus of the camera. I can choose the focus point very accurately myself. That's because the camera has 5655 focus points. I notice that the camera focuses very fast. It detects faces and eyes of people as soon as they enter the frame, if they're close enough. That's very useful if you're a portrait photographer, for example. With Servo AF, you have continuous eye detection. With this, the camera always looks for eyes and faces.
Creative videos with focus pull effect
This camera has enough video options for novice videographers who want a high image quality. I can record in 4K resolution, for example. A disadvantage would be that the camera crops my image. I can add focus pull effects while I record. This means that I can switch the focus from 1 subject to the other in 1 shot. I can record with 25 fps in 4K, which allows me to record smooth images. For slow motion videos, I choose Full HD resolutions with more frames per second.
Take photos with 8 fps
With the EOS R, I can take photos with 8 fps. This is mostly thanks to the fast image processor. I can easily take photos of moving subjects, for example. After a couple of seconds, the buffer is full and the camera has to process my photos. So I can't take infinite photos at this speed. Thanks to the full-frame sensor, I can photograph in different light situations with the camera. Even inside. I don't have to increase my ISO value to do that, and I don't see a lot of noise in my photos as a result.
Conclusion
I think that the Canon EOS R is a versatile camera. The model has functions that'll make both photographers and videographers happy. It has a fast autofocus system with face and eye detection. This is useful if you use the camera for portrait photography. You can capture action moments with 8 fps. Videographers can record in 4K and add focus pulls to their videos. The disadvantage is that the camera crops the image if you record in 4K.
