Where do you place your new projector?

Do you want to project a specific image format with your projector? Then you cannot place or mount the projector wherever you like. This is due to the way the position of the projector influences the size and shape of the image. In this article, I will explain how you determine the ideal placement of the projector.

Calculate the distance with the projection ratio

With the projection ratio you can calculate from which distance the projector projects an image of 1 meter wide. If the projector has a projection ratio of 1.86:1, you have to place it 1.86 meters from the wall. You can double this distance for an image width of 2 meters. Some projectors have a minimum and maximum ratio, such as 1.86:1 - 2.04:1. This means that they have a zoom function that makes the image larger or smaller. This gives you more room to play with during installation.

Move the projection with lens shift

With the lens shift function, you can change the direction of the lens, so that you move the image horizontally or vertically. This is useful when you cannot position the projector directly in front of the screen. This problem arises, for example, when you mount the projector on the ceiling. There may also be furniture or other obstacles in the way, so that the projection does not fall exactly on the screen. In this case, the lens shift function offers a solution.

Adjust the viewing angles with keystone correction

Are you aiming the projector diagonally up or down? Then the image looks more like a trapezium than a rectangle. Fortunately, most projectors have keystone correction, with which you change the position of each angle of view. Just like with lens shift, you can also easily change the direction of the image. The disadvantage is that this affects the image quality. So only use this function to adjust the viewing angles or if the projector does not have a lens shift.
