Tips for the best timelapse video

Time-lapse videos look amazing. How great would it be to learn how to make one? For starting time-lapse videographers, I've listed a few useful tips. You'll see it's not difficult to make a good time-lapse video.

Tip 1: a good preparation is half the job

Preparation

Determine what you want to record. Based on that, you can choose the best location. Check it out in advance, before you bring all your equipment. Is the view sufficient, and can you safely place the camera? Always from a couple of full batteries and empty memory cards. That way, you can easily get started. Making a time-lapse video takes time, so bring something to eat and drink.

Tip 2: always use a sturdy tripod

Sturdy tripod

The most important accessory when you make a time-lapse video is the tripod, of course. Because the camera records the same thing for a long period, you can't record by hand. The risk of vibrations is too big. With a tripod, you can solve this problem. Another advantage is that you can relax and enjoy your surroundings while the camera is recording. A tripod which stands firmly in place is the best option.

Tip 3: control your camera remotely

Control remotely

To make sure your don't disturb your time-lapse video with vibrations, you can control the camera from a distance. Nowadays, you can control almost any camera wirelessly via an app on your smartphone. There are also separate wired and wireless remotes for cameras. You can start the recording by pressing the button on the remote. That way, you always start the time-lapse with a stable shot.

Tip 4: choose the right interval for the subject

Interval

Most cameras have an interval timer. That allows you to set the camera to the right interval in advance. The size of the interval depends on the type of time-lapse you want to make. If you make a recording of clouds that drift pas slowly, you can leave 10 seconds between recordings. Are the people in the city your subject? Use a 2-second interval. If your camera doesn't have an interval timer, you can speed up the video in editing software.

Tip 5: set up your camera

Adjust in advance

The shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity affect the lighting for your time-lapse videos. That's why they're also called the exposure triangle. When you adjust 1 of the 3, you also need to adjust the other 2 to keep the balance. Each situation is different, so check the light monitor on your camera for the right lighting when you adjust the settings.
