How do you transfer data to your Synology NAS from Windows?
Step summary
You can transfer files from your Windows computer to your Synology NAS in a couple of steps. After following these steps, you can quickly transfer your photos, videos, or other files. You can transfer your data in the following way:
- Step 1: prepare your PC
- Step 2: activate the Windows file service.
- Step 3: connect the NAS to the explorer
Step 1: prepare your PC
Before you can get started with transferring data from your Windows PC to your Synology NAS, you need to prepare a couple of things:
- Create a shared folder.
- Connect your Windows computer to the same network as the NAS.
- Check if you have access to the DSM (DiskStation Manager) dashboard. Go to the webpage of the DSM Customer portal to do so.
- Check the name of your NAS. You created this during the installation of the DSM operating system.
- Check the name of the created volume. Go to the storage management in DSM and go to the volume management.
- Remember the name of the shared folder you want to connect (for example: 'Movies').
Step 2: activate the Windows file service
Your NAS has to communicate with Windows. Perform the following steps:
- Go to the NAS web interface.
- Open the configuration screen (control panel).
- Go to 'File Services > SMB/AFP/NFS'.
- Turn on 'SMB'.
- Click on 'Apply'.
Step 3. connect the NAS to the explorer
- Open 'Explorer' and go to 'This PC'. Then click on 'Assign Network Station'.
- Choose a station letter (for example: B).
- Add 2 backslashes (\\) to 'Folder', then the server name of your NAS, followed by a single backslash (\), and finally the name of your shared folder. It will look something like this: \\Diskstation\Volume1\Movies.
- Click 'Complete'.
- Enter your DSM username and password. Click 'OK'.
- The map is assigned to your explorer and you can find it under 'This PC'.
You can now transfer files from and to your NAS, just like you do between 2 regular computer hard drives.
