What's NFC?
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It's a wireless way to exchange information within a 10cm radius. NFC is mostly known from public transportation cards and contactless payments with your debit card. Because the information is exchanged within a short radius, NFC is a relatively secure way of wireless communication. In addition to phones and payment systems, many cameras also have NFC nowadays.
ow does NFC on a camera work?
A camera with NFC has a special NFC tag. This tag consists of a micro chip and an antenna. The same tag is inside the device you want to connect your camera to via NFC. If you want to send a photo, the chip in your camera transfers information. The antenna in the NFC tag in a device like your smartphone receives this information via radio waves. This way, you can wirelessly transfer your photo within a 10cm radius.
When do you use it?
NFC has exactly the same advantages as any other wireless connection. If you have a camera with NFC options, you no longer need a cable to transfer recordings. In addition, you can use an NFC connection to turn smartphones into a remote for your camera with an app. This is very useful for taking family pictures you also want to appear in.
What else should you know?
To use an NFC connection between your camera and your smart device, you usually need to download a special app. So before you use it, carefully check which app you need. Note: you can only use NFC on Android and Windows phones. Apple phones do have NFC, but this can only be used with their own payment system Apple Pay at the moment.
