How do you solve the noise of a dryer?

Before you can solve the noise of your dryer, you first have to listen to the sound:

1. Thump or bang at the start.
2. Buzzing noise.
3. Metallic noise.
4. Rattling noise.
5. Squeaking or grinding noise.
6. Ticking or knocking noise.
7. Vibrating noise.
8. More noise during the wool cycle.

You might hear a thump or bang at the start of the first dryer cycle. That's nothing to worry about, it just means the transportation safety on the dryer has come off.

A buzzing noise coming from the dryer is possibly caused by the compressor. This is very normal for most dryers. It's also possible that the fans are producing noise. This is also very common and doesn't mean that something is broken.

If you hear a metallic noise, it means there's an object hitting the drum wall. For example, a coin, pin, or button. Open the dryer door. Check the inside of the drum rim with a little mirror to see if something got stuck.

If the dryer is too close to the wall or your washing machine, this can cause a rattling sound. If possible, move the dryer away a bit.

With a squeaking or grinding noise, there's a great chance the lint trap or condenser is full.

Clean the lint trap first:

1. Take out the lint trap.
2. Remove large dust particles.
3. Rinse the filter under the faucet.
4. Place the filter back.

Clean the condenser:

1. With a condenser dryer, you can take the condenser out of the bottom of the dryer and rinse it off with a shower head.
2. With a heat pump dryer, the condenser is fixed and you can use a vacuum brush to clean it.

If your dryer makes a ticking or knocking noise, there are different possible causes. If the ticking noise sounds like metal, it's possible that your zipper is hitting the drum. Or maybe it's a loose button. Do you continue to hear a ticking or knocking noise? With older dryers, you sometimes have to replace the carbon brushes or have the bearings checked. Do you have a new model? It's a good idea to let a technician take a look.
