How do you expand a TP-Link Deco network?
Get started with extending the TP-Link Deco
Expanding your Deco system is easy. Still, you have to keep some things in mind. We'll explain it to you in 3 steps.
- Step 1. Choose the right extension
- Step 2. Determine the location of your extra WiFi point
- Step 3. Connect the Deco extension to your network
- Step 4. Connect the Deco extension to your network
Step 1: choose the right extension
With Deco, you can combine all types of extra WiFi points. Do you currently have a Deco X60 system? Connect an extra Deco M9 station to that without any problems, or an X60 station to an M9 system. Keep in mind that slower stations work at a lower speed than the rest of your mesh WiFi network. That's why we recommend buying an extension that matches your current system. The same type of extra station always works best.
Step 2: decide how many stations you need
Depending on your house and the number of devices in your house, you need more or fewer mesh stations. You can add a maximum of 9 Deco stations to your network, but you probably don't need them all. These stations have a range of about 12m without interference. Thick walls or other devices can cause interference, which results in a smaller range. In case of a townhouse with 3 floors, we often recommend 3 stations. A larger house will need more. In that case, you can install 2 on both ends of your second floor.
Step 3: determine the location of your new WiFi point
The spot where you don't have WiFi yet determines the location of your extra WiFi point. If you want WiFi in the attic, it's best to place it in the attic. Keep in mind that the new location should at least reach 1 other WiFI point. Don't have a WiFi connection in the attic at all? If that's the case, your extra WiFi station won't do you any good there. Place it in the hall near the stairs to make sure you get a connection, for example. The Deco app helps you do that.
Step 4: connect a different Deco model
All TP-Link Deco models work together. You can connect them all in the same way. Keep in mind that your internet is as fast as your weakest link. That's why you have to place slower models further away from your main router. This way, the largest part of your network stays as fast as possible. Only the internet around your slower model slows down this way. Read below how you set up your new Deco routers.
