How do you install a radiator knob?

You want to use a new smart thermostat knob. You'll first have to replace the old radiator knob. In this article, we'll explain how you can check if your radiator is suitable for a smart knob and how you replace the thermostat knob.

Install a radiator knob in 5 steps

The installation takes about 20 minutes. You need a screwdriver or pipe wrench. Via these 5 steps, we'll help you with the installation.

  • Step 1: check if your radiator is suitable
  • Step 2: disassemble your old thermostat knob
  • Step 3: turn on the thermostat knob
  • Step 4: install the new radiator knob
  • Step 5: connect the knob to the internet or with the wall thermostat

Step 1: check if your radiator is suitable

Your radiator is suitable for a smart thermostat when the current one has a radiator knob with numbers. If that's not the case, you can have a technician replace the valve with a M30x1.5mm thermostatic radiator valve. If you do have a suitable radiator, you can install a smart radiator knob.

Step 2: disassemble your old thermostat knob

Unscrew the old thermostat from the radiator. Loosen it with a screwdriver when you can see small screws next to the knob. Use a pipe wrench when you don't see small screws. After this, you can unscrew it by hand. Clean the pin behind the knob and press it firmly 5 times with your wrench. This way, you'll make sure the new knob screws on easily.

Step 3: turn on the thermostat knob

First turn on the thermostat, that's easier before your screw it on. Remove the lid from the knob by pressing it, or unscrew the top of the knob. Put the batteries in the knob and press on a button next to the batteries. In case of a Tado knob, this is placed on the front of the radiator thermostat.

Step 4: install the new radiator knob

Connect the new radiator knob to the radiator. Use one of the included adapter rings or connect the thermostat right away. You can tighten the thermostat knob by hand. If you properly loosened the pin in step 3, you don't have to turn very hard. At this point, you can already manually control the thermostat. If you don't have an internet bridge, this was the last step. Finish the installation via the app of your thermostat.

Step 5: connect the knob to the internet

Was an internet bridge included with your thermostat? Press it, so it'll connect to the radiator knob. Open the app for all smart radiator knobs and finish the installation there. Set a temperature correction, for example, or choose the room where your thermostat knob is via 'add an accessory' or via 'set up rooms'.
