How do you descale your Nespresso Citiz (& Milk)?

We'll explain how to descale your Nespresso Citiz. When you descale your machine in time, you don't allow limescale to build up in the pipes. That way, you preserve the best coffee taste and also extend the lifespan of the coffee machine. We recommend you do this every 6 months. Descaling your Citiz takes about 15 minutes.

It's best to descale your Nespresso machine twice a year. Your Citiz doesn't indicate this, so you must keep track of this. Use the Nespresso descaler or a universal descaler for this.

Step 1: prepare the descaling

Prepare the descaling
  1. Make sure there are no used capsules in the machine or in the container.
  2. Lift the lever and drop the last used coffee capsule into the container.
  3. Empty the container and put it back.
  4. Empty the drip tray and put it back.
  5. Remove the water tank from the coffee machine and fill it with 500ml of water.
  6. Add the descaler to the water.
  7. Place a container of at least 1L under the coffee spout.
  8. Place the full water tank back in the coffee machine.

Step 2: descale the machine

Start the descaling
  1. Turn on the Nespresso machine.
  2. Wait for the lights to stop flashing.
  3. Press the button for an espresso and lungo for 3 seconds at the same time.
  4. Both buttons flash.
  5. Now press the lungo button once. The machine starts descaling right away.
  6. Wait until the water tank is completely empty. Then fill the water tank with the contents of the container.
  7. Place the empty container back under the coffee spout.

Step 3: rinse the machine

Rinse the machine
  1. Press the lungo button once again to rinse the machine one more time with water and the descaler
  2. Wait until the water tank is empty. Remove the drip tray and empty it into the sink.
  3. Place the empty container back under the coffee outlet.
  4. Remove the water tank from the machine and rinse it well under the faucet.
  5. Fill the water tank completely with fresh water and put the water tank back into the machine.
  6. Press the lungo button one last time to rinse the machine. This time only with water.
  7. Wait until the water tank is empty.
  8. Press the button for an espresso and a lungo at the same time to exit the descaling mode.
  9. Empty the drip tray and fill the water tank with fresh water.
  10. Your Nespresso Citiz has now been successfully descaled.
