How do you defrost your freezer?

You might not look forward to defrosting your freezer. That's because it's not a fun task. Luckily, we made an easy step-by-step guide to quickly remove ice buildup from your freezer. This way, the freezer lasts longer and you save on energy costs.

With every 2mm of ice, the energy consumption rises with about 10%. If your freezer uses about € 100 per year, you can already save € 10. With the 6 steps below, you can easily defrost your freezer.

  • Step 1. Turn off the freezer
  • Step 2. Empty the freezer
  • Step 3. Defrost the freezer
  • Step 4. Speed up the defrosting process
  • Step 5. Clean the freezer
  • Step 6. Turn on the freezer

Step 1: turn off the freezer

Switch off the freezer

First, turn off the freezer. You can do that with the off button at the top of the appliance. Does your freezer not have an off button? Unplug the connector from the socket.

Step 2: empty the freezer

Next, empty your freezer completely. Temporarily store your frozen groceries in another freezer, cooler, or cooler bag. If it's very cold outside, you can also put your items in the garden or on your balcony.

Step 3: defrost the freezer

Now that your freezer is turned off, the defrosting process starts. Most freezers have a drip tray. Put this in front of the outlet and let the molten ice run in there. You can recognize the outlet by the small pipe or rubber hose at the bottom of the upright freezer or chest freezer. You can also put some towels in the freezer to collect the thawing ice.

Step 4: speed up the defrosting process

Defrost the freezer faster

You can defrost your freezer faster in several ways. Remove large chunks with a wooden spatula or plastic scraper. Don't use iron, because this can damage the cooling elements. You can also put a pan or container with hot water in the freezer and close the door. Use the special thawing spray if you really want to be done quickly.

Step 5: clean the freezer

Clean the freezer

When the ice has defrosted, it's a great moment to clean the inside of the freezer. Use a damp cloth with baking soda. When you're done, dry the freezer thoroughly with a kitchen towel, so no moisture gets left behind which can freeze.

Step 6: switch the freezer back on

Switching on the freezer

Turn the freezer back on and place back all frozen groceries. Defrost the freezer about 6 times per year. Does your fridge have a Low Frost function? You only have to do so 2 times per year. You don't have to defrost a freezer with No Frost.
