How do you create curls with a hair straightener?

In addition to straightening your hair, you can also create curls with a hair straightener. There are various ways to create curls. In this article, we'll explain 3 ways step by step. So you can head out with a lot of curls.

Get started with your hair straightener

Hair straightener

We'll explain how to create curls with a straightener in the following steps. We'll highlight the steps in this article.

*Step 1. Take care o, protect, and brush your hair.

  • Step 2. Section your hair.
  • Step 3. Create waves or curls.
  • Step 4. Define your curl.

Tip: want your curls to last longer? Use a strengthening mousse.

Step 1: take care of, protect, and brush your hair.

A hair straightener works with heat, which can damage your hair. That's why it's important to protect your hair before you start curling it. You can do so with a heat protector, such as a serum. Is your hair damaged because you've dyed it or naturally frizzy? Use an extra hair care product to keep your hair healthy and shiny. After that, brush your hair well.

Tip: want your curls to last longer? Use a strengthening mousse.

Step 2: section your hair

Section your hair

Divide your hair into 2 sections before you start curling it, the top and the bottom. To do this, place your index fingers on your temples and slowly pull them back in a straight line. The hair you've pulled back will be the top section, the rest forms the bottom section. Tie the 2 sections with a hair tie or clip, so you keep a clear overview when you're curling it.

Step 3: create curls or waves

Curl with a hair straightener

Create curls vertically

Grab a small strand of hair and hold your straightener vertically. Clamp the strand with the straightener close to the roots of your hair. Rotate the straightener around its axis once while the strand is clamped around the straightener, so 360 degrees. Guide the rest of the strand and hold it, if necessary. After that, you can slowly pull the straightener downward with a single motion. As soon as the strand falls out of the clamp, wrap it around your finger in the direction of the curl to stimulate it.

Tip: rotate the straightener away from your face, so your hair also curls away from your face. For a natural effect, switch the rotation directions with each strand.

Curl with a hair straightener

Create curls horizontally

For this way of curling, open the straightener and hold it horizontally. Wrap a strand around the straightener and clamp the strand with the straightener. Close the straightener and slowly pull it down in a single motion. When the strand is no longer clamped, wrap it around your finger in the curling direction and release it.

Curl with a hair straightener

Create waves horizontally

With this method, you create waves instead of curls. Hold the strand at the bottom with one hand. Keep the straightener horizontal and clamp the strand close to the roots. Turn the straightener 180 degrees forward and slide the straightener down a couple of centimeters. Repeat this for the whole strand. Finally, squeeze the curl upward with your hand and release it.

Step 4: define your curl

Define your curl

Right after you create the curl with the straightener, it's still hot. For a good result, it's important to let the curl cool down in the curled shape before you brush it. While the hair is still warm, it easily turns into a different shape. Once your hair has cooled down, feel free to brush it with your hands or a brush to loosen it up a bit. Want your curls to last longer? Spray some hairspray on them.
