Get started with your hair clippers

You've bought hair clippers to cut your hair and maybe trim your beard. But how do you use the hair clippers and how do you prevent going out with a bad haircut? In this article, we'll give you some important tips, so you can comfortably cut your hair or shave at home.

Get started with the clippers

You can cut your hair with the following steps. We'll explain the 6 steps below in this article.

  1. Prepare your hair.
  2. Select an appropriate length setting.
  3. Cut or shave in the right direction.
  4. Trim your beard.
  5. Create details.
  6. Maintain your clippers.

Step 1: prepare your hair

Prepare your hair

Before you get started, it's important that your hair is clean and dry. Wet hair may clog the blades or damage the clippers. If you go from long to short hair, it's important to first cut your hair with scissors. This way, you prevent the trimmers from getting tangled up in long hair. It's important you comb your hair in the direction it grows when you cut it with the scissors.

Step 2: choose a suitable length setting

Choose a suitable length setting

If you go for an almost bald look, set the clippers to a length setting of up to 1mm. If you want a buzz cut, choose a length between 1 and 3mm. For a slightly longer haircut, choose a length setting between 1 and 10mm. For longer haircuts, choose a cutting length of at least 16mm. Check the cutting lengths in the manual or on the device. Tip: start with a long length, as you can always go shorter.

Step 3: cut or shave in the right direction

Cut or shave in the right direction

You cut or shave against the hair direction. This way, you ensure you cut your hair equally. Keep the teeth of the shaver head aimed upwards. Keep a comb at hand, so you can comb your hair back in the grow direction. We recommend you stick to a specific order when cutting your hair. Start at the back and side of your head and work to the top.

Step 4: update your beard

Trim your beard

After cutting or shaving your hair, you can also use hair clippers to trim your beard. You can only do this if you don't need to create sleek lines and details and your beard is longer than a stubble beard. When you want to trim your beard, choose a large attachment comb and shave from your neck to your jaw. Keep scissors and a comb at hand to trim your beard in places where the clippers can't reach.

Step 5: create details

Detail

Hair clippers generally aren't suitable for creating smaller details. Use a precision trimmer for this, which is included with some hair clippers. A precision trimmer trims up to a length of 1mm. You can use the trimmer after cutting your hair or beard to create sleek lines and contours. If the hair clippers don't come with a precision trimmer, you can use it without an attachment to carefully create sleek lines.

Step 6: maintain your hair clippers

After the haircut

After cutting, you can wipe the hair from your hair clippers with a brush. Some clippers are waterproof and you can easily rinse them under the faucet. To keep the blades sharp and clean them, we recommend using oil or cleaning spray regularly. Just drip some oil on the blades and turn on the hair clippers. This way, the oil lubricates the blades and you can enjoy your hair clippers longer.
