Where are you allowed to fly with a drone?

As a drone enthusiast, you want to send your drone to the sky as soon as possible. Before you start flying, make sure to check if you're allowed to fly on your location. There are a couple of areas in Belgium where you're not allowed to fly. These so-called no-fly zones are indicated on the Droneguide maps with different colors. In this article, we'll explain what the colored fly zones mean for you as a drone pilot.

Everything on fly zones in Belgium

The Belgian air space is divided into different zones. With a drone, you can only fly in the open areas of the air space. Check if you have permission to fly at your location before you take off. Check the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority Mobility and Transport: https://map.droneguide.be

In this article, we'll explain how the Belgian air space is divided and where you can fly with your drone.

  • Red zones: not allowed to fly
  • Yellow zones: temporarily not allowed to fly
  • Unmarked zones: allowed to fly

Red zones: not allowed to fly

Is the area you want to fly in red on the Droneguide map? You're in a no-fly zone. In this area, you're not allowed to fly with your drone. You'll find these red areas near large cities, airports, harbors, or industrial areas. If you do fly there, there's a big chance you interrupt other air traffic, or that you cause safety problems. This can lead to dangerous situations.

Yellow zones: temporarily not allowed to fly

The yellow zones are temporary no-fly zones. These zones temporarily close the airspace for air traffic. They do this during helicopter drills, for example. If you fly your drone here, it may cause interruptions and create dangerous situations. After a while, the yellow zone will disappear from the map and you'll be allowed to fly here again. A yellow zone that overlaps with a red zone will turn orange on the map.

Unmarked zones: allowed to fly

Doesn't the map on your location have a color? You're allowed to fly your drone here. In this area of the airspace, you can take as many drone shots as you like. Of course, you're obligated to follow the general drone rules. This means that you can't fly over crowds and buildings, and that you can't bother anyone. Have fun flying.
