Expert review Sonos Five

In addition to the Sonos Arc soundbar, Sonos has also launched a new WiFi speaker. This Sonos Five isn't exactly unfamiliar territory. It's the successor to the Play:5, which has been around for some time. I've tested the Five and you can read what I think in this article.

  • The speaker has NFC, so you can easily make a wireless connection with your smartphone.
  • With additional Sonos speakers, you can easily create a surround or multi-room setup.
  • Trueplay adjusts the sound of your speaker to the acoustics of your room.
  • The speaker doesn't support Bluetooth.

First impression Sonos Five

First impression of the Sonos Five

The Sonos Five comes in a pretty large and heavy box. Just as I expect from Sonos, they really thought about the design. And it's not just the speaker itself, but also the packaging and overall appearance. The design of the Five has a completely even surface and nice rounded corners. In addition, the box includes a power cable and a short guide, so it's very straightforward.

Set up the Sonos Five

It's easy to set up the Five. With the Sonos app, I add the new device to my system right away. The app automatically recognizes the speaker and the setup itself is self-explanatory. If it's not, the manual is very useful as well. I use TruePlay to match the sound to the room and install the voice assistant via the Google Assistant app. All of this takes me about 10 minutes and I can listen to my favorite playlist right away.

Powerful and professional sound

Sound quality of the Sonos Five

The sound coming from the Five is incredible. When I test the volume at 100%, it's almost like I'm in a club. The tones are balanced and I'm enjoying a powerful, professional sound. I can tell that I'm hearing the music just as the artist intended, thanks to the different audible layers. And the bass isn't just audible. I can actually feel it as well. Now that I've heard this sound, I can definitely say that I never want to settle for anything less.

User-friendly app and voice assistant

Sonos App in use

I've always been a fan of the Sonos App. I think it's modern and innovative. It works quickly and is very easy to use. The WiFi speaker even has Google Assistant. I can teach it to listen to my voice. I often use the built-in voice assistant in the morning to ask about my calendar or the weather. But you can also use it to control your smart home or control your music.

I'm positively surprised by the Sonos Five. The WiFi speaker is extremely loud and powerful, looks very sleek, and produces HiFi sound. I'm convinced that the music is how the artist intended. The setup is super easy, as Sonos guides you through the process step by step. The app is easy to use as well and thanks to the voice assistant, you can get help hands-free.
