Expert review of the Nikon Z6III
Nikon Z6III Body
- Thanks to the semi-stacked full-frame image sensor, you can take photos at 60 fps.
- The improved viewfinder is extra sharp, thanks to the 6-megapixel resolution and high brightness.
- You can record in 4K resolution at 120 fps or record RAW video footage in 6K at 60 fps.
- The first memory card slot only fits a CFexpress or XQD card, the second slot does fit an SD card.
First impression of the Nikon Z6III
The Nikon Z6III feels sturdy. It has a large grip, so it feels comfortable in my hand. I think the fold-out screen is a large improvement compared to its predecessor. That way, I can also record myself for a vlog or take photos from difficult angles. I notice that the camera has 2 memory card slots. That's useful, because I can always make a backup of my footage. I use a regular SD card and a fast CFexpress or XQD card.
Semi-stacked full-frame image sensor
The semi-stacked full-frame image sensor is new. This sensor processes images even faster, which allows me to take JPEG photos at 60 fps. That way, I can capture every movement of my subject. That's nice when I photograph animals, but it's also useful for sports photography. When I photograph RAW, I take 20 photos per second. Thanks to the semi-stacked sensor, the autofocus of the camera is very fast and accurate. It recognizes various subjects, such as animals, vehicles, birds, and airplanes. That way, I can easily and clearly capture my subject.
RAW video in 6K
The Z6III also has improved video performance. I record RAW footage in 6K resolution at 60 fps with the camera. The 6K resolution is vert high, so the footage looks razor-sharp. During post-editing, I can easily crop the footage without quality loss. It's also nice that I can record RAW with the camera. The camera stores more information, which allows me to edit the colors and lighting even more precisely. For smooth slow motion footage, I record at 120 fps in 4K or at 240 fps in Full HD.
Razor-shap and clear viewfinder
I notice right away that the viewfinder of this camera is improved. When I look through this viewfinder, I see much clearer and sharper images than I'm used to with other cameras. I can even see clear images on a sunny day and easily determine my frame. The high quality of the viewfinder is made possible by the high 4000-nit brightness and 6-megapixel resolution. The viewfinder also has a high refresh rate of 120 fps. That way, the image looks smooth. Even take photos of fast-moving images.
Don't miss a single moment with pre-release capture
I sometimes press the shutter button too late during a fast moment, so I miss the photo moment. This is especially a bummer during spontaneous moments, when I photograph a family for example. That's why I think the pre-release capture function is useful. When I half press the shutter release button to focus, the camera already stores footage. As soon as I fully press the shutter release button, it stores the images it took 1 second before. It takes photos at up to 120 fps. I'm less likely to miss a special moment this way, when a soccer player scores a goal for example.
Upload photos to the Nikon cloud
The Nikon Imaging Cloud is new to the Z6III. When I connect my camera to the internet, it automatically makes a backup of my photos in the cloud. That's very useful on vacation, for example. It stores the images for free for 30 days. There's no storage limit. In the Imaging Cloud, I can also download 9 color spaces that I can transfer to my camera. I can use them to take photos right away and add special color effects. For example, my photos look like I took them on a roll of film.
Conclusion
In my opinion, the Nikon Z6III is a nice and versatile camera. It has many options, but it's still user-friendly. Most photographers can use this camera without any problems. It has powerful functions for the demanding photographer, such as the very fast image sensor and RAW 6K video. For the enthusiastic hobby photographer, the Z6III is a camera that can take your photography and videography to the next level.
