Expert review LG QNED866

The first thing I notice is the thin bezel of the LG QNED866. This makes the screen look extra large. I also like it that I'm not looking at a thick, black bezel. The TV stands on a slim, half-round stand. The stand is flat, which makes it seem like the TV is hovering. I also notice that the TV is very thin. I find the LG Magic Remote next to the LG QNED866 on the cabinet.

I select a dark scene to test the contrast of the QNED866. The QNED screen consists of thousands of LED lights that dim and light up individually. The TV uses this to make specific areas of the screen extra dark, while the bright parts remain bright. For example, I can clearly see the sparks of fireworks against the dark background. I also barely see a halo around the bright fire. Thanks to this Mini-LED backlight, I see strong contrasts and don't miss a single detail in dark scenes.

The QNED866 combines a Quantum Dot layer with a NanoCell filter. Both techniques use tiny particles that ensure as many of the right colors as possible end up on the screen. Thanks to the 10-bit panel, the screen has a color gamut of more than 1 billion colors. These special techniques make these colors look extra realistic. For example, I see all the different tones of yellow in a dandelion like I see them in my garden.

I stand in front of the TV at an angle to test the viewing angle. The advantage of an IPS panel is the wide viewing angle. Even when I sit at an angle, I see clear contrasts and the colors of the image don't change. Useful, if you like to watch a movie with a large group of friends. The TV is placed in a room with a lot of light. Due to this, I do see my own reflection. I expect the TV to show less reflections in a darker room.

The QNED866 has a sleek design. Thanks to the thin bezel, the image fills almost the entire screen. The television includes a half-round, plastic stand with a thin layer of steel. This stand is dark gray, and you'll barely notice it on the cabinet thanks to the flat design. Unfortunately, you can't turn the stand towards your viewing position. At the same time, this isn't necessary thanks to the wide viewing angle.

I select some music and turn up the volume. The sound is good enough for sports games or talkshows. The bass sounds deep and powerful thanks to the built-in subwoofer. The voice of the singer is clearly audible, but isn't as clear as with a soundbar. If you like to watch movies and series often, I'd recommend a soundbar with this television. With a soundbar, you'll be able to enjoy a room-filling sound.

The QNED866 has the extensive webOS smart platform. I see many common apps right away, like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube. The menu fills the entire screen, which gives me a clear overview of all the apps and functions. For example, I see a tile with the connected devices. This is useful if you've connected a console or soundbar. On the tile with the weather forecast, I can see if I should wear my raincoat later.

I can control the TV with the LG Magic Remote. This special remote works with motions. When I point at the TV, a cursor appears on the screen. When I move the Magic Remote, the cursor moves along. Do you prefer to use the buttons? There's a scrolling wheel on the center of the Magic Remote that you can use to easily navigate through the menu.
