Expert review of the GoPro HERO 9 Black
GoPro HERO 9 no longer available
The GoPro HERO 9 is no longer available. The successors from the GoPro HERO series have improved image stabilization and a higher image quality.
First impression of the GoPro HERO 9 Black
GoPro adjusted the packaging of the HERO 9 Black. I really like what I'm seeing, because I receive the action camera in a very compact case. This is useful when I want to take it with me while I travel. The design of the camera hasn't changed. The screens on the front and back are slightly bigger, but that's all. The HERO 9 has foldable mounts on the bottom, just like the HERO 8. Thanks to this, you won't need an attachment frame.
Very stable images with HyperSmooth 3.0
Compared to previous models, the image stabilization has been improved again. Besides regular image stabilization, this action camera has HyperSmooth boost for extra stabilization during exercising. I also use this boost with high resolutions and framerates. It allows me to record very smooth and stable images. Another thing I really like, is that the camera straightens the horizon. As a result, you prevent crooked images. I no longer have to do this during post-editing.
Record videos in 5K resolution
Thanks to the new, 23-megapixel sensor, I can record 5K, 30p video footage. As a result, I see a lot of detail and my videos are very sharp. I use this resolution in various record modes, including wide or linear. Thanks to this sensor, I can also capture 20-megapixel photos. I can adjust the file format, zoom, lens, and even more for this. I can't just record videos with it, but also capture landscapes. You can use the SuperPhoto mode for an even better result.
Record yourself with the screen on the front
The HERO 9 is the first GoPro with a screen on the front. I can now see what I record when I record myself. While recording in high resolution, I notice that the screen on the front is slightly delayed. In Full HD, the screen works even better. I can choose from 2 screen options. Full screen fills the entire screen of the camera. With the other option, I see the entire recording image with 2 black borders with settings on the top and bottom.
Live streaming to your social media channels
Share your videos live via your social media channels with the livestream function. This was already possible via YouTube and Facebook, but you can no do this via the GoPro platform or Twitch as well. Twitch is a video site where you can stream videos. Many gamers use this website. When you connect the GoPro to your computer or laptop, you can use it as a webcam. That way, you'll have a better image quality and a wider image.
Conclusion
The HERO 9 Black is an action camera for athletes and vloggers that like to go on an adventure. With the screen on the front, you can easily capture yourself while working out. The disadvantage is that the screen shows a delay in higher resolutions, like 4K or 5K. Luckily, this doesn't affect your video footage. You'll receive the camera in a compact case, which you can also use when you travel. These improvements are small compared to the HERO 8, but they're worth it.
