Expert review of the Canon EOS RP

A mirrorless camera that is both affordable and has a full frame sensor. This is a combination that has me curious about the image quality of the camera. The model is very compact and lightweight, which is very suitable for photographers who are regularly out and about. In this review, I'll take a closer look at the most important specifications. We'll look at user-friendliness, image quality, and autofocus, among other things.

Canon EOS RP Body

26.2-megapixel full-frame sensor | 4K, 25 fps

  • You can take bright photos at dark locations thanks to the large 26.2-megapixel light-sensitive full-frame sensor.
  • Thanks to the Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus system, you can focus quickly on moving objects.
  • You can record in detailed 4K quality.
  • To reduce motion blur, you need a lens with image stabilization.

First impression

First impression

My expectation of a light and compact system camera becomes reality when I take the device from its box. The camera body is so compact that my hands can just about wrap around the grip. I can image that people with larger hands attach the extra grip, which provides a better hold. When I attach the lens to the camera, the device get a lot heavier right away. The low weight of the body is almost entirely undone by this.

User-friendliness

User-friendliness

Because the screen van be tilted and rotated up to 180 degrees, the device is easy to use. You can easily photograph from different angles and use it to vlog. You set up the camera via the touchscreen, which works well. The control buttons work similarly to the ones on the Canon cameras you're used to. You can adjust the camera entirely manually or take photos with one of the automatic modes. The camera provides a short explanation of the settings in automatic mode.

Image quality

Image quality

The full frame sensor on the Canon EOS RP makes it suitable for dark locations. You can take sharp photos with a lot of details. I used the 24-105mm lens with a fixed aperture, so the light value remains the same when you zoom in. This is definitely an advantage. The maximum aperture of f/4.0 isn't very big. That means you need to increase the ISO value when there is less light after all. Despite the full frame sensor, there is some visible noise with high ISO values.

Autofocus

Autofocus

You have a Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus with 4779 autofocus points that you can choose from. This way, you can select the part of your photo that you want to focus on very accurately. Aside from that, you can use this autofocus system to track moving subjects, such as athletes or pets. If you're focusing on a face, the camera recognizes the eyes and produces an even more accurate focus. This is especially handy if you often photograph portraits. In general, the autofocus system works well.

Recording functions

Recording with the EOS RP

You've got the option to record in 4K with 25 frames per second. The downside is that you don't have Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus for this resolution. The camera uses contrast detection in 4K. The Dual Pixel autofocus is available in Full HD, though. Because the camera body doesn't have image stabilization, you need a lens with image stabilization to reduce motion blur. An added bonus for videographers is the external microphone jack. This way, you can improve the sound quality of your videos.

Conclusion

26.2-megapixel full-frame sensor | 4K, 25 fps

This Canon EOS RP is a user-friendly mirrorless camera with a good image quality, thanks to the full frame sensor. The grip is solid to handle, but the extra grip is convenient if you have larger hands. The low weight makes it easy to use, though the lens weighs it down anyway. The camera is less suitable for demanding videographers, due to the contrast detection when you record in 4K. If you're happy with Full HD quality, then this camera offers plenty of options.
