How do you connect your Nintendo Switch to your TV?

The Nintendo Switch is ideal for gaming on the go. But, you'll still want to explore Hyrule at home sometimes, and that large TV is there for a reason. In this article, we'll explain how to connect your Switch to your television.

What do I need?

To connect your Nintendo Switch to your TV, you'll need the following items.

  • The Nintendo Switch
  • A TV or monitor with a HDMI connector
  • The Nintendo Switch dock
  • The power supply of the Nintendo Switch dock

Step 1: connect the dock

Go through the following steps to connect the dock of your Nintendo Switch.

  1. Fold open the back of the Switch dock.

  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the bottom port of the dock.

  3. Connect the USB-C cable to the top port of the dock.

  4. Plug the adapter at the end of the USB-C cable into the socket.

Your Nintendo Switch dock has now been connected to the power grid.

Step 2: connect the dock to the TV

The connectors of your monitor

Go through the following steps to connect your dock to your TV or monitor.

  1. Grab the HDMI cable that's connected to the dock.
  2. Look for the HDMI connector on your TV or monitor, these are often on the side.
  3. Plug the HDMI cable into your TV or monitor.

If you followed the steps properly, you'll now have a cable going from your TV or monitor to your Nintendo Switch dock. You're now ready for step 3.

Step 3: connecting the Switch

Go through the following steps to use your Switch on your TV or monitor.

  1. Turn on your Nintendo Switch.
  2. Hold your Nintendo Switch in a way that the + and - buttons are at the top.
  3. Let the Nintendo Switch slide into the dock as indicated on the image.

The screen of your Nintendo Switch will now turn off and appear on your TV or monitor. Isn't this the case? Go to step 4.

Step 4: Select input

Remote

Turn on your TV and select the right channel via the 'Source' button on the remote of your TV or via the menu and the buttons of your monitor. The channel is often called 'HDMI 1' or 'HDMI 2', depending on which HDMI port you're using. Are you set to the right channel? You'll see the Switch screen.

Still don't see an image on your TV or monitor? Check your Nintendo Switch, your dock, and your cables.

  • Is there dust or dirt in the input of your Nintendo Switch?
  • Is there dust or dirt in the HDMI and USB-C input of your dock?
  • Is the USB-C port on the bottom of your dock bent?
  • Is your HDMI cable or USB-C cable broken? Try your cable on another device or replace your cable.
