Image quality
S95D: QD-OLED and 144Hz
The Samsung S95D has a QD-OLED display. This display has special pixels that light up and dim individually. This makes black look truly black, and you won't see a gray glow in dark images. The TV also has a very thin layer of Quantum Dots. These particles let more color through, which you'll notice best during a nature documentary with lots of colorful scenes. Do you connect a PC with a powerful video card? You can play games with a high refresh rate of up to 144Hz.
S90D: OLED and 144Hz
As opposed to the S95D, the S90D has an OLED display. The biggest difference between these image technologies is the color representation. For example, standard OLED TVs don't have a layer of Quantum Dots and the color gamut is narrower. This makes the OLED S90D less suitable for movies, series, and TV programs with lots of bright scenes. The contrast is still big, but the colors look less vibrant on your screen. This TV supports a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, if you connect a PC that can handle this.
S85D: OLED and 100Hz
The S85D has an OLED display, just like the S90D. You can enjoy deep black levels and a strong contrast that way, but the TV is less suitable for bright scenes. Colors mostly look great during dark scenes, where you can see every detail. The OLED S85D has a 100Hz refresh rate. This makes your PS5 games look smooth and you won't miss any of your favorite soccer player's movements. Do you want to play PC games in 144Hz? We recommend the S95D or S90D.
Brightness
S95D: highest brightness
The S95D has the highest brightness thanks to the thin layer of Quantum Dots. Thanks to these particles, the TV displays more vibrant color tones and you can watch images with a peak brightness up to 1700 nits. That makes the TV good for in a room with lots of natural light and bright lamps. With the S95D, you can enjoy OLED HDR Pro. This technology increases the contrast between dark and light images. This makes the headlights of the luxury sports car on your screen look lifelike and you'll see more details in your favorite action game.
S90D: high brightness
The screen of the S90D doesn't have Quantum Dots, so it's less bright than the OLED S95D. The colors you see are less bright. The TV supports OLED HDR+, a lesser version of OLED HDR Pro. This means the peak brightness of the S90D is about 1200 nits. Thanks to this high brightness, the TV is suitable for a brightly-lit room. Every detail remains clearly visible, even in direct sunlight.
S85D: average brightness
Just like the S90D, the OLED display of the S85D doesn't have Quantum Dots. This makes the on-screen colors look less bright and the image less vibrant. The television does have HDR support, so the difference between dark and light images is bigger. HDR on the S85D doesn't work as well as on the S90D and S95D. That's because this TV has a lower peak brightness of 650 nits. Very light parts of the screen aren't always visible this way.
Viewing angle and anti-glare
S95D: excellent viewing angle and Glare Free anti-glare coating
Thanks to the QD-OLED display and Glare Free anti-glare coating, the S95D has the best viewing angle. You can watch TV with a large group without any problems. Details and colors don't distort on the screen when watching it from the side. The Glare Free anti-glare coating also prevents all reflections from sunlight and other light sources. The TV is a good choice for rooms with lots of natural light or near bright lamps.
S90D: very good viewing angle and anti-glare coating
Thanks to the OLED display, the S90D has a very good viewing angle. The TV is a good choice when you watch a lot of TV with your friends. Colors and details on the screen are always sharp and realistic. The TV isn't Glare Free, but has a standard anti-glare coating. This makes reflections of bright light sources less bothersome, but still visible. Especially when you want TV from the side. Due to the lower brightness of the TV, you sometimes have to close the curtains for the best viewing experience.
S85D: good viewing angle and anti-glare coating
The S85D has almost the same viewing angle as the S90D. The TV also has an OLED display. These TVs are known for their wide viewing angle. The light comes from the pixels themselves and shines into every direction. Wherever you're sitting, the colors you see are bright. The S85D has the same anti-glare coating as the S90D. The difference between these TVs is the brightness. Reflections of bright light sources are limited, but not invisible due to the lower brightness. We recommend the S85D for dark rooms.
Conclusion
For the best image quality and viewing experience, choose the Samsung QD-OLED S95D. Thanks to the Quantum Dots in the screen, the images shown are more realistic and brighter than on the OLED S90D and S85D. Your viewing experience in a brightly-lit room is also better. Is your room a bit darker and do you want a TV with deep black levels? Choose the S90D or S85D.
