Compare the Insta360 X4 to the X3

If you're looking for a 360-degree camera, the INsta360 X4 and X3 are both a good choice. A 360-degree camera records everything you can see around you, so you don't have to think about your frame while recording. During post-editing, you can choose which footage you want to use in the video. The X4 records the sharpest footage in 8K resolution. In this article, we'll highlight all the differences between the X3 and X4.

Image quality

X4: 360-degree footage in 8K at 30 fps

With the X4, you can record 360-degree footage in 8K resolution at 30 fps. You can't slow this footage down. You can do this when recording in 5.7L resolution. For a 360-degree camera, 8K resolution is very high. Keep in mind that you can't upload entire 360-degree videos on social media. You'll have to crop the footage to a 16:9 or 9L16 aspect ratio. This lowers the resolution, so the end result is a 2.7K video.

X3: 360-degree footage in 5.7K at 30 fps

The X3 records in 5.7K resolution at 30 fps, so you record less sharp videos than with the X4. This means you can see more pixels when you zoom in. If you crop videos for social media, you're left with Full HD footage. This image quality is fine when making videos for your own use. Do you regularly upload videos to social media? We recommend the higher image quality of the X4.

Battery life

X4: long battery life of 135 minutes

If you like recording thrilling actions and stunts, you'd rather not worry about an empty battery. The X4 has a long battery life of 135 minutes when recording in 5.7K resolution at 30 fps. If you'd rather record in 8K, the battery lasts up to 75 minutes. The battery of the X4 is exchangeable, so you can easily replace it when it's empty and continue recording for longer.

X3: 81-minute battery life

The X3 records for up to 81 minutes in 5.7K resolution at 30 fps. This is 54 minutes shorter than the X4 can record in the same image resolution. This makes the X3 mostly suitable for recording shorter stunts, like a trick on a ski ramp. If you take the camera with you on a long hike or city trip, you have to replace the battery more often.

Functions

X4: controls with hand gestured

You can control the X4 in 4 different ways: the buttons on the camera, via the Insta360 app, voice control, or hand gestures. Thanks to that last function, you can also easily record videos of yourself when your camera is on a tripod. The camera starts or stops the recording when you put your hand up. It takes a photo when you make a peace sign, which is when you put up your pointer finger and middle finger at the same time. This function works when you're between 0.6 and 1.6m away from the camera.

X3: no controls with hand gestures

You can't control the X3 with hand gestures. This is less useful if you often make recordings of yourself. Want to control the camera remotely? Use the voice controls. This works at a 1.2m maximum distance from the camera. That means the range isn't as big as the range of the hand gestures of the X4. You can also control the X3 with the buttons on the camera of via the Insta360 app, just like the X4.

Conclusion

Do you like recording impressive action videos? Or would you rather decide the frame of your footage later? A 360-degree camera is a suitable camera for you. Choose the Insta360 X4 for videos in the highest quality. This camera has an extra long battery life, so you can take it on the go for longer. Don't you upload your videos to social media and mostly record short videos? The Insta360 X3 is a good choice.
