Image quality

QN85A: Neo QLED Mini-LED

The Samsung QN85A is one of the 4K models from the new Neo QLED television series by Samsung. Neo QLED is new in 2021, and it's the name Samsung uses for the models with the Mini-LED technique. The screen of the QN85A has thousands of Mini-LED lights, which light up or dim individually. Because the lights are so small, they can light up the right pixels very precisely. This way, the QN85A provides a strong contrast between light and dark and shows deep black levels. In combination with the 10-bit HDR panel, this ensures a very realistic image.

Q80A: QLED Full Array

The Samsung Q80A is the QLED counterpart of the QN85A. We've know QLED by Samsung for longer. A QLED screen has a layer of Quantum Dots. This prevents light distortion and ensures bright and lively colors. The Full Array Local Dimming makes the screen light up or dim in specific places, but not as accurately as with Mini-LED. The Q80A has a 10-bit HDR panel as well, so it's better than the lower QLED series.

Processor

Samsung Neo QLED QN85A

QN85A: Neo Quantum Processor 4K

The Neo Quantum Processor 4K processes images that are produced by the QN85A via the Mini-LEDs. This processor does this faster and better than the processor of the QLED TVs. The color representation is more realistic because of this, just like the black. Thanks to the Adaptive Picture and Adaptive Sound, the processor adjusts the brightness, the contrast, and the sound tot he content and the ambient light. Up-scaling is effortless. So the TV converts the Full HD images to the sharper 4K.

Q80A: Quantum Processor 4K

The Q80A has a Quantum Processor 4K. With this processor, Adaptive Picture, Adaptive Sound, and up-scaling are possible. So for these aspects, the Q80A isn't doing all that bad. Because the processing power and display technique are less, it does fall short of the Neo QLED. This is mainly shown through a slightly less smooth image and the black levels aren't as deep black.

Design and remote

Samsung Neo QLED QN85A design

QN85A: slim design

The QN85A has a slim design and is only 2.69cm thick. This makes it a lot more stylish, especially when you hang the TV on the wall. The included remote is the newer version of the One Remote, the black Solar One Remote. It has a solar cell that charges through daylight and artificial lighting, but other than that, it works the same as the standard One Remote.

Samsung QLED Q80A design

Q80A: slightly thicker design

In terms of design, the Q80A is slightly heavier and 5.47cm thick. The bezel around the screen is the same size as the one of the QN85A. With 0.9cm, it's very thin and stylish. So the Q80A is very similar to the QN85A, except for the thickness. This TV also includes the Solar One Remote by default.

Conclusion

The Neo QLED QN85A is clearly a better television than the Q80A. The Neo QLED Mini-LED technique and the Neo Quantum processor 4K ensure a better image quality. This mainly shows through the smooth images and deep black levels. The bezels are equally thin for both TVs, only 0.9cm. But the QN85A has a thinner screen, which is more stylish if you hang it on the wall, for example. Is your budget smaller, or are you satisfied with an image quality that's slightly less good? The QLED Q80A is still a good choice.
