Advice on accessories for filming with a photo camera

Accessories help you to get the most out of your camera while filming. In this article I explain to you what accessories you can use to expand your camera. This way you know exactly whether or not you need a microphone adapter, film lamp or field recorder for your next film project.

Which accessories do I use?

Microphones and audio adapters

Microphones and audio adapters

Do you want to get serious with video? You should use an external microphone to improve the sound quality. The internal microphone of your camera doesn't always give the desired result. For recording an interview, you can use a shotgun microphone for directed sound recordings. If you want to record ambient noise, you should use a stereo microphone. Doesn't the desired microphone fit? You can use an audio adapter on your camera. This allows you to connect multiple microphones simultaneously.

Film lamps

Film lamps

During filming you do not always have enough of the available light. You use a movie lamp to highlight your subject extra. This way you can also take clear pictures in the evening and indoors. If you opt for extra lighting during filming, you can choose from 2 types of lamps. A camera lamp that mounts on your camera and a studio lamp. You connect the latter with the camera and place yourself separately in space.

Memory cards

Memory cards

Movie images deliver large files. To save these files quickly, you need a memory card with a high writing speed. When the writing speed is too low, images are not stored smoothly. The writing speed of a memory card is indicated by a class indication. Always choose a memory card of class 10 for filming with your camera. These cards have a high writing speed.

Lenses

Lenses

Which lens you choose depends on the type of video you want to make. If you're not going to zoom while recording, you should choose a lens with a fixed focal point. Because the lens doesn't have zoom options, it'll offer a higher optical quality. In addition, you won't be bothered with image distortion with a fixed lens. If you prefer to record with a zoom lens, you should make sure the lens has a fixed aperture for a stable light intensity.

Neutral density filter

Neutral density filter

With a gray filter you influence the amount of light that falls through the lens. This prevents overexposure of your film. You choose a gray filter based on the number of 'stops' of light that he has to stop. A stop is a doubling or halving of the amount of light that reaches the sensor of your camera. An ND2 gray filter stops 2 stops slightly. With a variable gray filter, adjust the density by tightening the filter.

Field recorders

Field recorders

When you save motion pictures on an SD card, your images are automatically compressed. The images are reduced so that the camera does not spend too long writing down the information. With a field recorder you record images uncompressed. Through the screen of the field recorder you can see the images exactly as the sensor films them. On the device you also often directly adjust the brightness and colors. You connect your field recorder with an HDMI cable to your camera.

External viewfinders

During filming it is important that you see what you are filming. Due to incident light or complicated viewpoints, you do not always have a good view of the LCD screen of your camera. An external viewfinder helps you with this. You mount this extension on the screen of your camera or on the hotshoe connection. Most external viewfinders have a magnification, which makes you focus more accurately.
