Expert review of the DJI Mavic Air 2

On 27 April 2020, DJI has released a new drone model, the DJI Mavic Air 2. With a flight time of 34 minutes, I'm very curious about this drone. The drone also has a 48-megapixel sensor which allows you to take sharp photos. The drone records in high frame rates for smooth video footage. I'm curious about the results.

  • Thanks to the extra batteries of this set, you can extend the battery life of your drone.
  • You can record in 5K with 30 fps for sharp and smooth images of your drone flight.
  • Thanks to the large 1-inch sensor, you can take detailed videos and photos in different light situations.
  • The drone weighs more than 250g, so stricter rules and laws apply to you.
  • It's not allowed everywhere to fly a drone.

First impression of the DJI Mavic Air 2

First impression of the DJI Mavic Air 2

At first sight, the drone looks sturdy. The design is a bit larger than the first Mavic Air. This is probably because of the improvements, such as the larger battery. Thanks to the fold-out legs, the model is compact enough to take with you on your travels. I also don't find the drone very heavy. The remote has had a makeover. I place my phone on top in a useful fold-out mount. This is very easy.

Detailed images in different light situations

Image quality DJI Mavic Air 2

I take the drone with me to a nature reserve during sunrise. The images look very sharp and detailed, even if it's not completely light yet. I use the HDR recording mode for a large dynamic range. This results in bright videos even in the large contrast between the bright sunlight and the dark forests. The maximum image resolution of the Mavic Air 2 is 48-megapixel. I see a lot of details such as the leaves of trees in this as well.

Easy setup via the app

User-friendliness DJI Mavic Air 2

The flight time of 34 minutes is a great advantage of this drone. The flight time is relatively long. I use the DJI Fly app to change various settings. I can choose to take a picture or record a video here. When I choose to record, I set the resolution and frame rate. I can also see the remaining flight time in the app. When the battery is almost empty, the drone returns to the location of the remote.

Extensive recording options

Recording options DJI Mavic Air 2

With the Mavic AIr 2, I can record detailed video footage in 4K at maximum 60 fps. In Full HD, I can even record in 240 fps. This high frame rate allows me to record smooth slow motion videos. A useful function is focus track. During recording, the drone keeps my subject in focus. I let the drone focus on a tree, so I can capture it without any problems while focusing on the views.

Good connection with OcuSync 2.0

While flying, I have no issues with the connection between the drone and the remote. This is because of the good OcuSync 2.0 connection with a 10km range. As a result, your videos are smooth and you won't see any shocks in your footage. In addition, the drone has a 3-axis gimbal which reduces vibrations. This makes my footage near perfect.

Video editing

Video editing DJI Mavic Air 2

After testing the DJI Mavic Air 2, I make a video from the footage I captured. I can do this in the DJI Fly app. For example, I can choose from example videos, but I can also make a complete video. For this, I use the separate video clips I recorded. Do you have a failed clip? You can easily cut that out. To finish the video, I add music to my footage.

Conclusion

The first thought I have after testing this drone? I want to buy it. I'm very pleased with the image quality. Flying it went well and the drone responds very fast to the remote. The combination of the high frame rates, image stabilization, and OcuSync 2.0 connection makes your videos smooth and flawless. The downside is that this drone weighs more than 250g, so you need a basic light drone course.
